Common water contaminants in Mid-Coast Maine

Hardness Minerals
What it is – hard water contains calcium and magnesium minerals which bond with everything they touch leaving “limescale” in their wake. Treatment – Our guaranteed water softener provides the best option for soft water on the market. It improves the water throughout your entire home while protecting your appliances and fixtures.
Iron

What it is – Iron can come in a couple different forms including dissolved and non-dissolved. Both of which can leave red/orange stains on your sinks, tubs, and toilets and can be extremely hard to remove. Iron can also cause bacteria to grow and let off an unpleasant smell.

Chlorine

What it is – Chlorine is a chemical used by municipal & local water treatment plants to reduce harmful bacteria in the water supply. While this sounds good, chlorine and chloramines can cause a bacteria of their own to grow called trihalomethanes (TTHM) which is quite unsafe to drink or bathe in.

Treatment – The most efficient Chlorine reduction filter is Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) or Catalytic Carbon. Due to the high level of chlorine added to water by cities, you will really appreciate your water with chlorine reduction. See our Whole House Filtration page for more information.

Chromium 6

A new study by the Environmental Working Group reports that local drinking water contains hexavalent chromium, a toxic metal that has been linked to cancer. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not require the testing for the metal, the survey found that levels in our local water were pushing the levels proposed as a safety limit by authorities. This contaminant has been proven to cause cancer. You can search your zip code to see the amount in your municipal water supply here: https://www.ewg.org/interactive-maps/2016-chromium6-lower-48.php#.WXYljtPyu-l

Dirt & Sediment

What it is – dirt & sediment is just as it sounds. This is typically most common in well water or surface water that hasn’t gone through a treatment facility.

Treatment – Dirt and sediment are found in almost all water supplies and will decrease the efficiency and lifespan of your appliances. For example, sediment in a water heater can prevent the heat from transferring to the water in the tank once sediment has built up in the bottom. Our whole house filtration system can help with this problem.

Other Contaminants

What they are – common contaminants in our area can include nitrates, lead, arsenic, pharmaceuticals, and more. These are not included in the free water test, however, we do offer full laboratory testing at an affordable price.

Treatment – Protecting the water in your home is important, however ensuring the purity of the water you are putting in your body is even more crucial. Our Reverse Osmosis drinking water system will give you a peace of mind that your drinking water is healthy, and you are going to fall in love with this drinking water system that can provide up to 50 gallons per day of delicious water.

I highly recommend working with Coastal Water! Laurie, the owner, came to our house for a consult on the same day I called. She was quick, professional, and efficient. She clearly explained everything and didn't try to upsell us on anything unnecessary. She recommended a water softener system, a new filter, pressure tank, and well shock. We had coliform bacteria, iron, and manganese in our well water. After Laurie and Dan finished their install, she did another water test two weeks out, and all our issues were resolved. Our water is drinkable again! Laurie understood our concerns about keeping our family safe and has already scheduled follow-up tests to ensure the system keeps working to keep our well water clean.I can't recommend Coastal Water enough. They are great communicators, and they won't try to sell you on expensive systems you don't need. Call them--you won't be disappointed!
After living in our home for 9 years we decided to retest our drilled well water. Our 12/2024 results were uranium was 43.6 (above EPA safety levels), water hardness 93.8 and PH was 7.89. Laurie Hegarty (Costal Water Treatment owner) suggested an ion resin system. I was absolutely convinced a RO system was our solution. Very sad to say it wasn't. Laurie's solution was a dual resin single tank system. After a few weeks, she took a water samples for a new test. The results were amazing. Water hardness is 1.45, PH is 7.15 and uranium is <1. Laurie's quick responses to our questions and level of detail were great.Thank you Laurie for your knowledge and guidance; and your staff with the installation.
I am a new customer with Coastal Water Treatment. I am very happy with the service, products and professionalism of Laurie & her team. She listened to my issues, made a quick appt. to come out, got water tested, & a new Ph & water softening system installed. She came back for retesting a few weeks later. I feel in very good hands with this company! Thank you, Laurie!
After moving into our home in Maine we discovered coliform bacteria issues with our well water. I reached out to one of the bigger water treatment companies to shock our well. After they shocked our well they let me down and tried to oversell me on expensive systems I knew I didn't need. Out of frustration with the big name company and the continued expense of having to constantly purchase bottled water I reached out to Coastal Water Treatment by email one evening for a second opinion. To my surprise the very next morning I had a reply by email from Laurie and she called me shortly thereafter to setup a time to meet and discuss my needs. It is very rare these days to find a company that responds so quickly and so professionally. I was super impressed when Laurie arrived at my home and introduced herself and I found out she was the owner of the company. I shared my concerns about the undrinkable water due to coliform bacteria , stains in toilets from high manganese, calcium and iron content and the hardness of the water. Laurie made me me feel like a family member and assured me she only wanted to address and solve the water issues that I was dealing with. WOW NO MONEY GRAB HERE! Someone who actually cares about my issues and wants to put together a proposal to fit those specific needs. She emailed me a proposal the same day and we setup a time and date to install a water softener system, sediment filter and an under sink reverse osmosis water system for drinking water. On the day of installation she was right there alongside her plumber Dan to make sure everything went smoothly. Dan did an outstanding job installing all the systems. Laurie explained everything to me about what I could expect from the new systems and also gave me an extra sediment filter for the future filter change and 2 extra bags of salt. Since our install Laurie came back and tested our water and the results were amazing. The calcium, hardness, iron and manganese are now filtered out. The Coliform bacteria is completely absent. My wife and I are 100% satisfied with our new water treatment systems. Our drinking water is delicious, no more stains in toilets and my wife loves how the water softener makes her hair look and feel. Coastal Water Treatment is a David among Goliath Water Treatment companies that provides exceptional customer communication and value. Do yourself a favor skip the big name companies and give Coastal Water Treatment a try if you want value and customer service that exceeds all your expectations.
Quick, quality service with professionals who really knows what they are doing! Appreciate when a vendor says don't fix what isn't broken yet instead of trying to upsell a full system. Informative and allowed us to ask questions and walked up through the process. Finished on time, on budget and the work is immaculate!
Mrs. Laurie was very friendly and nice she knows her work very well thank you for helping me
